Editor’s Note: At Relativity, we partner with Cellebrite on many product and community initiatives, including some activities at Legalweek 2024. Their takeaways from the conference are below; we added some of our own perspective, too.

A pleasant surprise at Legalweek this year was an interview with Heisenb—Bryan Cranston—during the keynote. Over the course of an hour, he regaled the crowd with lessons learned from a lifetime of acting.

He was at once charming, humble, and practically bouncing out of his seat with energy. For this crowd of legal technologists, we were particularly impressed with his advice—gleaned from years of casting calls—to always approach opportunities as though you were giving them a gift. To enter a room wanting a role or needing a job was to rob yourself of your power. Give them a gift. “No codicils!”

We at Relativity were in a learning mood. Among the many reasons we attended Legalweek was to convene our joint mobile advisory board with Cellebrite, the leader in mobile data collection. We wanted to further understand the role of mobile technology in e-discovery and what practitioners need to collect, process, and produce this data successfully.

Our advisory board is comprised of a panel of customers who share their feedback with us, and give us a close look at the many challenges associated with mobile data and how to manage it during e-discovery and investigations workflows. Meeting with them at Legalweek, amidst all the discussion and activity of such a major event, led to some really insightful and productive conversations—and we’re pleased to say we learned a lot.

Following those conversations, we wanted to share some of the takeaways we brought back to the office after Legalweek. So, in today’s article, check out some reflections from the Cellebrite Enterprise Solutions team.

1. Massively Mobile

The ubiquity of mobile devices has created a wealth of digital evidence, but extracting relevant data efficiently remains a challenge. Considering this, the focus is shifting to emphasize the importance of establishing standardized workflows and fostering education to navigate this complex terrain. Practitioners require clear guidelines and dedicated training to unlock the potential of mobile data in e-discovery, transforming this potential hurdle into a powerful tool.

2. Practically AI

AI’s presence wasn't merely a trendy topic at Legalweek; it resonated as a practical necessity. Sessions delved deeper, acknowledging the need to move beyond mere curiosity and integrate AI effectively. While current initiatives focus on education and e-discovery automation, a crucial question remains: what does AI truly signify within the legal domain? Experts envision a future where AI streamlines complex workflows, not just in e-discovery, but across various legal tasks. Tools with seamless AI integration, offer a glimpse into this future of standardized, AI-powered legal processes.

3. Collaboration Minded

Gone are the days of isolated advancement; Legalweek this year emphasized the power of collaboration. Partnerships and alliances, exemplified by joint initiatives between diverse companies, showcased the value of working together. The legal tech community needs to forge bridges, not silos, transcending product lines to create integrated solutions that cater to the industry’s evolving needs.

Cellebrite and Relativity’s Mobile Advisory Board serves this very purpose, created as means for aligning goals and tackling shared challenges. Through this initiative with Relativity, the Mobile Advisory Board has surfaced the shift in the industry towards a “how you can help” attitude, cultivating a spirit of community. Collaboration is crucial in navigating the intricate regulatory landscape, whether it be through education or new, innovative solutions aimed at tackling the unique challenges in e-discovery.

4. The Human Element

While technology is undoubtedly transforming the legal profession, Legalweek served as a powerful reminder that humans remain irreplaceable. The narrative shifted away from robots replacing e-discovery and legal professionals, instead emphasizing how technology empowers people to deliver ever greater value. The future lies in striking a harmonious balance between leveraging cutting-edge tools and upholding the core values of the legal profession.

Legalweek 2024 went beyond showcasing the latest gadgets; it highlighted the need for standardization, education, and collaboration as the guiding principles for the future of legal technology. By embracing innovation with a mind for how human and artificial intelligence can and should collaborate to achieve the best outcomes, e-discovery professionals can walk a path where technology empowers—not replaces—them.
