Scaling e-Discovery in a Growing Pharmaceutical Legal Environment

As legal and investigation demand increased, a leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology corporation faced a common challenge for the pharmaceutical industry: how to scale e-discovery operations without sacrificing control, defensibility, or efficiency.

Their existing legal hold system could no longer keep pace with rising matter volume or meet internal expectations for auditability, consistency, and operational flexibility. At the same time, the corporation recognized the need to transition from on-premises environments to RelativityOne – a decision driven by the platform’s long-term sustainability, innovative capabilities, and operational flexibility.

Building a Modern e-Discovery Program with RelativityOne

To move forward, the pharmaceutical corporation turned to their service provider, Deloitte, as a strategic provider. Together, they defined several key priorities in this cloud transition:

  • Modernize legal hold and e-discovery with a scalable, cloud-based platform
  • Improve visibility, governance, and defensibility across matters
  • Create more efficient, repeatable workflows for both routine and complex cases
  • Maintain control over their data, processes, and long-term strategy

With RelativityOne as the foundation, the corporation – working alongside Deloitte and Relativity – implemented a transformational approach to preservation and discovery. This included configuring Relativity Legal Hold for end-to-end hold management; migrating matters from a legacy platform into RelativityOne; and establishing a repeatable, self-service model for routine matters.

For more complex matters, the corporation decided to leverage Deloitte’s managed services, supported by advanced analytics and review accelerators that reduce manual effort and improve review efficiency.

Deloitte’s deep experience with RelativityOne, including years of prior investment in the platform, enabled the corporation to quickly take advantage of advanced capabilities including:

  • Increased processing capacity and throughput
  • Accelerators and workflows to increase efficiency and reduce cost
  • Robust reporting and visibility tools
  • Generative AI workflows

This combination of technology and experience enabled the pharmaceutical corporation to modernize quickly while setting a strong foundation for future scale.

"The transition to the RelativityOne platform for legal data intelligence enabled a scalable, defensible, and efficient e-discovery program – improving visibility, control, and speed across matters. This is especially important in regulated industries like pharma, where stricter data governance, heightened chain-of-custody scrutiny, and the demands of managing e-discovery across matters can quickly compound compliance and litigation risk."

A Unified Platform Driving Speed, Scale, and Control

With RelativityOne in place, the pharmaceutical corporation now operates a more agile, governed e-discovery program – one capable of handling both high-volume, routine work typical of pharmaceutical legal teams as well as complex, large-scale matters that come up less predictably.

In just three months, the corporation successfully transitioned to Relativity Legal Hold from a legacy platform and, began leveraging self-service in their RelativityOne client domain including Relativity Collect. In its first year, the program has:

  • Migrated and managed 105 legal hold matters and over 4,250 legal hold custodians with greater auditability
  • Processed approximately 20 TB of data to meet ongoing demands for 25 e-discovery matters
  • Launched 29 new self-service matters within their RelativityOne environment

By consolidating legal hold and e-discovery into a single platform, the corporation has:

  • Increased visibility and strengthened governance
  • Reduced reliance on individual technical resources
  • Accelerated case execution through standardized templates and workflows
  • Enabled scalable operations without adding unnecessary complexity

Today, the pharmaceutical corporation operates with a modern e-discovery program that balances speed, control, functionality and flexibility – positioning them to meet future pharmaceutical legal demands with confidence.

"Many of us in-house face the same challenge – maturing our e-discovery teams, processes, and technology platform with increasing pressures on resources and budget. The answer for our organization was working with Deloitte’s Discovery team and RelativityOne. Now we’re able to address these challenges and provide a framework for building more capabilities and integrations in the future as needs change."
