How did they do it?

  • Used Analytics in RelativityOne to quickly cut through noisy data, establish early context, and surface key custodians and communication patterns
  • Applied aiR for Review to the refined data set to isolate a small set of documents to shape case assessment and strategy
  • Enabled associates to quickly move from document review to legal analysis, while giving partners early confidence in the evidentiary record

Getting to the Heart of the Case

Lowenstein Sandler regularly advises clients on complex matters where early insight can directly influence strategy and outcomes. In a recent engagement, the firm needed to quickly understand a complex 25,000 document data set. Their goals were three-fold: identify key players, understand the nature of the dispute, and surface early insights to help shape their case strategy and inform partner decisions and client advice.

The challenge was familiar: a tight timeline and large, noisy data set filled with duplicative and low-value material, making it difficult to pinpoint what truly mattered. Associates were under pressure to deliver answers fast, knowing their work would directly shape how partners assessed risk and set the direction of the case.

At the same time, speed alone wasn’t enough. The team needed an approach that accelerated understanding without sacrificing accuracy or defensibility – they needed early insights the firm could stand behind.

Establishing Foundational Context with Analytics and aiR for Review

The case team began by using Analytics to eliminate duplicative content, group thematically similar documents, and reveal communication patterns – allowing them to understand key custodians and themes far earlier than a linear review would allow.

As part of this approach, the team used both structured and conceptual analytics including:

  • Communication analysis to highlight key communicators and relationships early in the matter
  • Email threading to reduce the email review population by 27%
  • Clustering to further reduce the data set by 24%

With this context in place, Lowenstein applied Relativity aiR for Review to focus attention on the documents most likely to shape case assessment and strategy. The team iteratively refined prompts as their understanding of the matter evolved. After three iterations, aiR identified a narrow set of key documents representing just 4% of the total data set, sharply focusing the team’s review on what mattered most.

From Review to Strategy

As Lowenstein has incorporated aiR for Review into complex matters, partners have seen how earlier clarity into the record has supported more confident and strategic decision-making across their matters.

“At the prelitigation stage, Relativity aiR has helped our team efficiently review voluminous records, gain early clarity into the facts, and identify key documents. This has enabled us to make more informed strategic decisions.”
Jarrett Schindler, Partner, White Collar Defense, Lowenstein Sandler

For associates, the impact is felt in their day-to-day work. With aiR for Review, they spend less time grinding through volume and more time focused on legal analysis and strategic thinking.

“Relativity aiR for Review was a complete game-changer for our review. What would have taken our team hundreds of hours was reduced dramatically thanks to its efficiency and precision. The coding decisions were extraordinarily accurate and gave us confidence that nothing was overlooked. The time saved allowed us to focus on higher-level strategy rather than getting bogged down in manual review.”
Alessandra Moore, Associate, White Collar Defense, Lowenstein Sandler
