JND: Transforming e-Discovery Services for the Public Sector with Generative AI
Across the United States, JND aids law firms, corporations, and government agencies with expert legal operations management, litigation, and e-discovery support. By adopting artificial intelligence early on, JND has been able to support their clients in handling case litigation more quickly and economically, utilizing aiR for Review since the very inception of its limited general availability program.
Their use of aiR has since attracted the attention of several government agencies interested in using the technology to resolve complex cases with limited resources, leading to more successful litigation efforts and more effective pursuit of justice.
Facing an Impossible Task
A government agency needed to quickly identify critical case material to facilitate a large-scale investigation. They recognized it would be difficult to use traditional processes to uncover the most important documents from the massive, 1.3 million-document set containing significant amounts of irrelevant material. Strapped for time and resources, the agency turned to JND for guidance on how to complete what felt like an impossible feat. JND’s recommendation: use Relativity aiR for Review.
A Break in the Clouds with aiR for Review
JND began by using multiple RelativityOne capabilities at their disposal, cutting their initial document set in half through search terms, deduplication, and file filtration to isolate 650,000 documents to run through aiR for Review.
After aligning on nine issues crucial to the case, the team used aiR for Review’s issues analysis to identify documents related to those categories based on the AI’s recommendations and rankings. aiR for Review rapidly expedited what would have been a challenging and time-consuming issues review process. The team was able to cut the review population by 90%, uncover 66,000 documents related to the issues at hand, and identify 122 critical documents essential to the case. aiR for Review's lightning-fast analysis got through over a half a million documents in the very first day, reviewing the material an estimated five times faster than traditional methods.
With the document set speedily reduced and categorized, the team was able to delve deeper into the data that mattered and leverage aiR’s findings to help prepare for trial.
Clearing the Runway for the Public Sector
JND's experience with aiR for Review has since enabled them to better serve other government agencies, guide them through technological transformation, and demonstrate the tremendous benefits of generative AI for federal and state teams that are often so strapped for time and resources.
By using aiR for Review to identify key analyses early in the investigation, JND helped the agency conduct issues review in record time and make decisions faster. But the solution did more than just significantly reduce the document set size — it also provided early case insights for the government agency by speeding up discovery of key evidence at a critical time in the case.
aiR for Review’s ability to cut through the noise and rapidly identify the most crucial information allowed the small but mighty team to complete what felt like an impossible task in less time and with better output. The project established a new benchmark for efficiency in e-discovery in the public sector, laying the groundwork for the use of generative AI solutions across state and federal governments.
"We’ve seen both state and federal agencies express tremendous interest in using aiR for Review. They are tasked with completing some of the largest and most challenging projects, often with very limited resources. aiR allows agencies to do more with less, and to have confidence that they’re finding the most important documents, even if there are only five out of five million."
