- Maintained defensibility with lawyer-led oversight, sampling, and validation
- Enabled early, fact-based advocacy
The Challenge: SEC and DOJ Subpoenas
Morgan Lewis, a global law firm with a commitment to innovation, faced a fast-moving investigation on behalf of a publicly traded technology company client. The Morgan Lewis team needed to conduct a relevance review across tens of thousands of documents, including highly technical engineering materials and multilingual files.
Having publicly disclosed parallel probes from the DOJ and SEC, the clock was ticking. The longer these investigations remained open, the higher the risk of reputational harm and shaken investor confidence.
A traditional review would have required heavy staffing and longer timelines, slowing strategy at a moment when speed and accuracy mattered most.
The Approach: Earlier Insights, Grounded in Proof
Liz Gary, of counsel, worked closely with the Morgan Lewis case team to design and oversee a review strategy incorporating Relativity aiR for Review to support efficient and focused production. From the outset, an open line of communication was established with the requesting agencies, proactively disclosing the use of GenAI-assisted review and outlining the associated validation and quality control measures. By addressing methodology and oversight transparently and early in the process, the team minimized the risk of protracted negotiations regarding the review approach.
Leveraging aiR for Review, the team quickly prioritized documents aligned to the central issues of the case, refined scope as the investigation evolved, and maintained defensibility through targeted searches, sampling, and senior lawyer oversight. The focus shifted from processing volume to understanding the evidence.
“Using Relativity aiR for Review as part of our overall workflow, we were able to identify documents supporting our client’s position and interpret complex technical language, which helped inform strategic decisions earlier in the process.”
Liz Gary, Of Counsel, Morgan Lewis
aiR for Review quickly pulled out key documents – including materials that directly supported the client’s position and helped establish that the core allegations were unfounded.
Just as important, aiR interpreted dense engineering and technical language– allowing the team to understand intent and context quickly, without having to train a large team of reviewers on complex technical concepts.
The Results: A Quick Resolution
In under two months, a five-person team completed a defensible review – completing both DOJ and SEC productions. With early insights across the document corpus, the team was able to pressure-test the government’s assumptions, build fact-based arguments, and avoid late-stage surprises.
